Il flauto magico, titolo originale Die Zauberflöte, è un Singspiel (canto e recitazione) in dueatti musicato da Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Il principe Tamino si smarrisce in un bosco. Un drago gli attenta la vita e sviene, ma tre Ancelle, al servizio della Regina della Notte, uccidono il drago.

Quando rinviene si trova davanti uno strano personaggio. E’ Papageno, uccellator di corte, al servizio della Regina della Notte e della principessa Pamina, che mostra un’immagine della principessa a Tamino che subito si innamora. Papageno si vanta anche con il principe di aver ucciso il mostro, ma con la loro irruzione, le tre Ancelle puniscono Papageno e introducono Tamino alla Regina della Notte.
La Regina della notte, con voce suadente, gli racconta che sua figlia Pamina è prigioniera del re Sarastro e gli promette, che se la salverà, diventerà sua sposa.
Tamino accetta, ma vuole al suo fianco Papageno, che viene liberato dal lucchetto impostogli dalle Ancelle che, dopo aver consegnato ai due un flauto magico e un flauto di Pan, svaniscono. I due partono alla volta del Castello di Sarastro.
Al castello frattanto la principessa Pamina viene raggiunta da Papageno che le svela la storia del principe Tamino e la sua missione per salvarla. Ma Tamino si è sperso nel bosco e chiede aiuto al suo flauto magico, che gli svela la strada per il castello.
Al castello intanto il re Sarastro spiega alla Principessa che in realtà è sua madre sta tentando di ingannarla, ma lei non ci crede e svela a Tamino che Sarastro non la tiene prigioniera, come pensava il principe.
L’irruzione della Regina della Notte e il confronto diretto con Sarastro, scoprono, davanti ai due innamorati, le vere intenzioni della Regina, che si vendica con una maledizione perché nessuno più crede in lei: Tamino se uscirà dal castello morirà e Pamina non si sposerà mai.
Sarastro però riesce a modificare la maledizione: Tamino, per uscir vivo dal castello, dovrà superare due difficilissime prove: attraversare il divampare delle fiamme di un fuoco spaventoso e superare la terribile irruenza dell’acqua di un fiume in piena.
Tamino con molta difficoltà, e grazie al suo flauto magico, supera le due prove e i due innamorati, con smacco della Regina della Notte, vissero felici e contenti.
